(NewsNation) — A peptide being touted as a sunless tanning option is going viral online, but health experts are warning that it's dangerous.
Melanotan, also known as the "Barbie peptide," is a peptide injection that mimics a hormone in the body to make more melanin, according to Women's Health. It was also given the nickname because it's known to suppress a person's appetite.
"Melanotan binds to receptors in the skin's pigment-producing cells and induces them to create more melanin—that's what darkens your skin," said Dr. Jennifer Lucas, a dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic.

Lucas adds melanotan acts within the cells of the body just like UV radiation.
What are the risks of the Barbie peptide?
According to Dr. Janel Gordon, melanotan comes with several side effects:
Nausea
Vomiting
Loss of appetite
Unintentional weight loss
Experts also said that while melanotan is FDA-approved, it's not regulated for tanning. So, they advise consumers to be aware of where they purchase it from.

"Melanotan is not simply a cosmetic product—it is a biologically active peptide that can affect multiple organ systems throughout the body," Dr. Naiem T. Issa, a professor at George Washington University, added. "Many of the products being sold online are unregulated, have uncertain purity and dosing, and may expose users to risks that are not immediately apparent."
The peptide's use has led to cases where individuals have developed rhabdomyolysis, renal infarctions, posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome and priapism, according to Issa.
